Customizable KSIS homepage coming this fall

As previously announced, K-State’s Student Information System (KSIS) is being upgraded to a new version. Starting fall 2017, KSIS will have a new, unified user interface where mobile-friendly pages dynamically change based on the screen size of the device being used: smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.

Introducing Virtual Desktops at K-State

This spring the Instructional Technology team within iTAC has been hard at work on our newest innovation for campus, Virtual Desktops powered by Citrix XenDesktop and the Liquidware Labs Essentials Suite.  Through this initiative we will be providing a full Windows 10 desktop environment with all the apps that our users have come to expect, but with more granularity, control, and agility for administrators than ever before.

What Are Virtual Desktops?

Draper appointed associate vice provost for Information Technology Services

Betsy Draper has been appointed as the Associate Vice Provost for Information Technology Services beginning Monday, May 23, 2016. Draper will be responsible for the overall coordination of ITS strategic and investment planning, policy development, and portfolio management activities. She will also be in charge of research and analysis, including coordinating the identification, collection, tracking, and reporting of IT metrics, and the completion of industry and higher education surveys, as well as local, state and federal reports. Financial Information System successfully migrated to converged infrastructure

Over the last eighteen months, Information Technology Services (ITS) staff along with vendor partners have been working to overhaul our aging information technology infrastructure. The process of modernizing the data center combines servers, storage, networking, virtualization and management in a single managed solution referred to as a converged infrastructure. Joe Lear, director of enterprise server technologies explained, “This updated environment will allow us to merge our current server infrastructure from over 300 physical servers to four server racks, expand our virtualization capabilities, reduce our space requirements, provide a more reliable and faster system for data delivery and storage, and reduce power and cooling needs for the data center.”

Call for Presentation Proposals for SIDLIT 2016 Conference

Colleague 2 Colleague has put out a call for “transformational superheroes” working in SIDLIT call for proposalsSummer Institute on Distance Learning and Instructional Technology (or SIDLIT, pronounced “sidelight”) conference. The conference will be held Thursday and Friday, Aug. 4-5 at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.

Check out the new Waters 231 technology classroom renovation

A big project this summer was the complete renovation and remodeling of the Waters 231 technology classroom. With faculty and student input, the Division of Facilities and iTAC have planned and created an updated space for teaching and learning.

United States to attempt to dethrone China with world’s fastest supercomputer

China has the world’s fastest supercomputer in 2015, but in 10 years it might not be able to say the same. On July 29, President Obama signed an executive order calling for the U.S. to build the world’s fastest computer by the year 2025. The supercomputer would be 20 times quicker than the current leading machine, which is  the Tianhe-2 in China’s National Computer Center located in Guangzhou.

This new supercomputer would be capable of making one quintillion (a billion billion) calculations per second, also known as one exaflop. The National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) is a collaborative strategy to research and build the computer.

The future: Batteries with indefinite lifespan

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been known around the tech community as being ahead of the curve, but what it has achieved in partnership with Samsung may be the beginning of a revolution. MIT and Samsung recently announced they have found a way to make batteries with an “indefinite” lifespan by replacing an existing liquid electrolyte substance with solid electrolyte material.
