New electronic grade submission process this semester; no more paper forms

Beginning this Fall 2008 term, final grade submission will be electronic-only in iSIS. No paper grade sheets will be provided. Key criteria for electronic grade submission include:

  • For Dec. 15-17 final exams, grades are due 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22.
  • For Dec. 18-19 final exams, grades are due 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23.
  • Grades for all non-standard courses are due five calendar days after the completion of the course.
  • Grades must be assigned for all students on the grade roster before the faculty member can approve the grades.
  • K-State Online users must submit grades to iSIS and approve in iSIS in order to be posted.

This electronic grade submission process is totally new for this semester and differs from the “Electronic Grade Submission” process used over the last several semesters.  Instructor-led and online sessions are
available to familiarize you with this new electronic grade submission. Continue reading “New electronic grade submission process this semester; no more paper forms”

Hiding courses in K-State Online

Many K-State Online instructors are surprised to find they are students in a number of courses that have been made available to all system instructors, including an iSIS training course.  Instructors who have a large number of courses on their organizers may not have seen these courses because they are listed at the bottom of the course organizer –  way below all the courses they are instructors in.  One solution to this problem is to hide the courses you are not currently using, so they don’t appear on your organizer.  Hiding a course does not delete the course nor does it remove you from the course – it just hides it until you choose to show it again. To hide one or more courses, do the following:

  1. On your course Organizer, click the Preferences tab.
  2. In the Hide column, select the check boxes next to the courses you want to hide.
  3. Click the Save Preferences button.

To show hidden courses, click the hide/show link at the top of your organizer.

Hardy’s and other Axio presentations available online

The Sept. 18 presentation of “Sometimes Good is Good Enough – Sometimes It’s Not” by keynote speaker Darcy Walsh Hardy, a nationally known online education expert, is now available for viewing at axioconference.org/videos.

Hardy, who is also assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and executive director of the UT TeleCampus, a unit within the University of Texas system, focused her presentation on the need for instructors to understand new generations of students and build their courses according to students’ needs. She also emphasized the need for campuses to assist instructors in building online education.

Other presentations from the third annual Axio Conference are available for on-demand viewing:

Upgrade to Internet Explorer version 7 recommended

K-State recommends upgrading Internet Explorer 6 to version 7 because the latter provides substantial security improvements. Internet Explorer web browser versions below 7 are becoming more difficult to support for current web-based applications in use at K-State. In particular, K-State Online no longer supports versions of Internet Explorer below version 7.

K-Staters who have problems with K-State Online using Internet Explorer 6 are advised to update to version 7 or switch to Firefox. Internet Explorer 7 and other compatible browsers are available at http://public.online.ksu.edu/support/downloads. If you have any questions, contact the Help Desk, helpdesk@k-state.edu, 785-532-7722.

Reuse your course for fall semester

When you teach the same class each semester, you don’t have to create a new course. Instead, you can “version” your course and assignments for the new semester. When you do this, you will want to clean up or update areas of your K-State Online course. The Announcements, Calendar, Assignments, and Files you’ve put online are not automatically updated with each new version of your course. You will have to go into each of these tools and decide what you want to update, what you want to delete, and what you want to archive.

For reference, use the Reusing Your Course checklist (PDF) created by the iTAC trainers. You can also review the online help — after signing in to K-State Online, click the Help link in the upper-right corner and search for the Reuse Your Course topics.

Where is my K-State Online File Dropbox?

With the release of the K-State Online upgrade last weekend, the File Dropbox is no longer a component and will not appear in the homepage menu for students. (Components are features that are turned on or off per course.) Instead, you can now create multiple File Dropboxes without naming restrictions, and can organize them with Manage Files to best fit your course.

Your course File Dropbox that you used prior to last weekend has not been deleted. It has been renamed “CourseFileDropbox” (no spaces in the dropbox name) and has been moved under Content in Manage Files. It is currently unpublished. If you wish to continue using this dropbox, you’ll need to publish it so it is accessible to students.

* To publish, click the red X next to the File Dropbox. It will change to a green plus (+) sign indicating the File Dropbox is now published and students can again submit files.
* You can change the “CourseFileDropbox” name by clicking the black arrow next to the dropbox, and typing a new name in the “File Name” box.
* To create new dropboxes, from Manage Files, click the “New Item” button on the toolbar and select “File Dropbox”.
