Trend Micro antivirus updates to be released Nov. 10

Two important updates for Trend Micro security software are scheduled for deployment at K-State starting Tuesday, Nov. 10.

  1. For Windows platforms, OfficeScan 10 (TMOS 10) will be pushed to all computers that use the central Trend Micro servers.
  2. For Macs, Trend Micro Security for Macs 1.5 (TMSM 1.5) will be available from K-State’s antivirus website for manual installation.

Users of the central Trend Micro services, which includes all students in the residence halls, will be upgraded to TMOS 10 automatically. Once the software is installed, users will be prompted to reboot their computer. After that, about the only difference people may notice is a slightly different icon in the task bar system tray.TM-icon-SS

Installation of TMSM 1.5 is not automatic. Users must remove Symantec Antivirus (SAV) or any other antivirus software on the Mac, such as ClamXav, before installing TMSM 1.5. The TMSM 1.5 installation file along with instructions for removing SAV will be available from K-State’s antivirus website starting Nov. 10.

Trend Micro antivirus changes coming soon

As reported earlier, changes are in the works for antivirus protection for both Windows and Mac computers at K-State. For Windows, the primary issue was support for Windows 7 since Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 does not support it. For Macs, there were two issues — expiration of the Symantec AntiVirus for Macs license on Oct. 27 and Trend Micro Security for Macs 1.5 (TMSM) not supporting Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Fortunately, we now have solutions for all these issues.

Antivirus protection not yet available for Mac OS X 10.6

Apple aficionados are excited about last Friday’s release of Mac OS X 10.6, aka “Snow Leopard”. Unfortunately, security software vendors haven’t matched that enthusiasm,  so the likes of Symantec and Trend Micro do not yet support MacOS 10.6 with their antivirus products.

Consequently, K-Staters should delay deployment of Mac OS X 10.6 until a supported antivirus product is available. Continue reading “Antivirus protection not yet available for Mac OS X 10.6”

Update on Mac antivirus protection at K-State

For many years, K-State has provided antivirus protection for Mac users with  Symantec Antivirus (SAV) for Macs corporate edition (SAV). The bad news is that our license for SAV expires Oct. 27, and given the current budget challenges, there are no funds to renew. The good news is that Trend Micro now has a Mac antivirus client that is included in our site license, so it is already paid for with full support until March 2012 for all faculty, staff, and student office and home Mac computers.

SIRT, K-State’s Security Incident Response Team, is in the process of testing a beta release of a Trend Micro Security for Mac (TMSM) version 1.5. In fact, engineers from Trend Micro are on campus this week (July 27-28) to help install, configure, and test TMSM on servers and Mac computers around campus.  Unlike SAV, TMSM is a manageable product and includes more security features, such as support for Web Reputation Services. Trend Micro site license renewed for three years

Based on feedback from the campus and SIRT, K-State’s site license for Trend Micro OfficeScan security software was renewed for another three years. The license, which now expires March 31, 2012, covers computers both in the office and at home for all K-State faculty, staff, and current students. The Silver Premium Support contract was renewed for one year and will be re-evaluated each year.

OfficeScan provides K-State with a suite of security functions for desktops and servers that includes antivirus, antispyware, a firewall, intrusion detection, and blocking access to known, malicious websites (“Web Reputation Services“).

Trend Micro meeting moved to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18

The campus meeting about renewing the Trend Micro license postponed from last Friday is scheduled 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Union 213.  Since K-State’s license for Trend Micro antivirus software expires March 31, Harvard Townsend, chief information security officer, will facilitate a discussion of the options for renewing the license (which boil down to whether we renew for one year or three years), how a decision will be made, and considerations for Macintosh support.

K-State’s Symantec license for Macs expires in October 2009, and Trend Micro is about to release a native Mac antivirus product. Continue reading “Trend Micro meeting moved to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18”

Trend Micro license-renewal meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18

Update: Last-minute date change from Friday, Feb. 13, to Wednesday, Feb. 18

K-State’s license for Trend Micro antivirus/security software expires March 31, so we are in the process of exploring renewal options. It is not an option to switch to a different antivirus vendor at this point, given the complexity and magnitude of converting. However, K-State does have the option of renewing for either one year or three years, and Trend Micro is offering attractive pricing for a three-year renewal.

A campus meeting to discuss the renewal options is scheduled 1:30-2:30 p.m. 9:30-10:30 a.m.Friday, Feb. 13 Tuesday, Feb. 17 Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Union 213. Continue reading “Trend Micro license-renewal meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18”
