TechBytes April 9: Webinars for online learning

Gary Cunningham, Leigh Cunningham, and Gerry Snyder will present “Webinars for Online Learning” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in 301A Hale Library. Join this session to learn how to create live and recorded seminars for the Web. This session will show tools and tips in using Wimba and Adobe Connect.

TechBytes April 2: Creative Commons – free online resources

Brent Anders will present “Creative Commons – Free Online Resources” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in 301A Hale Library. This nonprofit site offers free-to-use music, photos, and other goodies. This session will provide an overview of many of these great online resources.

TechBytes March 26: Mobile Devices

Eric Dover will present “Mobile Devices” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in 301A Hale Library. K-State is one of the most wired campuses in the United States.  Eric will demo several portable devices, show what options are out in the market, how they fit with today’s needs, and where trends are heading in the next 5-10 years.

TechBytes March 5: Second Life Virtual World

Larry Havenstein and Neal Wollenberg will present “Second Life Virtual World” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in 301A Hale Library. Join this session for a tour of Second Life, an online social and learning environment. The discussion will include tips, tools, and ideas for navigating and building in SL.

TechBytes Feb. 19: Facebook in the Classroom

Marcus Ashlock and Chris Lavergne will present “Facebook in the Classroom” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in 501 Hale Library (Hemisphere Room). Join this session to learn how Facebook, an interactive online tool, is being used to enrich teaching in the classroom. This session will include ideas and tips for how to use Facebook. Spring TechBytes series begins Thursday, Feb. 19

The TechBytes series begins February 19.  Sessions are scheduled 1:30-2:30 p.m.

TechBytes seminars are free and open to the K-State community. This series shares technology innovations with the campus community, whether it’s a new technology or a new way to use an existing technology.

TechBytes survey online through Jan. 24

Your ideas for TechBytes session topics are needed for spring 2009. Take a few moments to share your IT and computing needs by completing the short TechBytes survey that’s online through Saturday, Jan. 24. TechBytes is designed to educate the campus community about existing information technology tools and services and to share future technology innovations.

If you’ve missed a presentation this semester, see the TechBytes website for a variety of resources such as streaming videos, handouts, and PowerPoint presentations.

TechBytes Nov. 13: Google Docs

Thomas Kuhn will present “Google Docs” at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, November 13, in 301A Hale Library . Come join this session to discover how Google Docs can be used as a collaboration tool for personal and professional projects.  The basics of Docs, Sheets, Presentations and Google Talk will be discussed. Google Docs is a free service that allows you to:

  • Create basic documents
  • Upload existing documents
  • Share and collaborate online instantly
  • Control who has access to your documents – documents can be available to a select few or published to the world

Google Docs is a great tool if you need to work with others on documents. Rather than editing documents and then e-mailing to another person or group to edit, everyone can just edit the documents live and online. See the Google Docs tour page for examples of how others are using the tool.

TechBytes Nov. 6: Twitter and Web 2.0

Kevin Champion will present “Twitter and Web 2.0; Twitter? What’s that?” at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in 301A Hale Library. In the current and ever-evolving technological environment, we are presented with an increasing number of mediums through which we can communicate in our school, work, and personal lives. To compound this issue, we also are at a generational nexus — where a new generation of young adults is graduating and entering work environments, having grown up and gone through college versed in many of the new emergent mediums. This presentation will address some of the new forms of communication; expectations the new generation has for its work and school environment; and how we might more effectively and appropriately communicate.
