ID Center phases out “smart chip” technology on Wildcat ID cards

by Audrey Taggart-Kagdis, Union marketing sales manager

The K-State ID Center and Information Technology Services announces the conversion of the “smart chip” technology to the prepaid Cat Cash system effective Monday, Oct. 5. At the start of every fall and spring semester, $10 in funds is placed on each student’s eID to be used for limited free printing at participating university computing labs ($5 during the summer). Once those funds are exhausted, the student will now use Cat Cash rather than reloading at a “smart chip” station.

“Transferring this service over to Cat Cash has allowed for a significant savings in technology expenses as well as the consolidation to one standard payment system on campus,” said Craig Johnson, assistant director of the K-State Student Union.

Technology e-books available through K-State Libraries

The K-State Libraries have made high-quality technology titles available through Safari Tech Books Online. Safari includes titles published in the current year and the previous two calendar years, and includes timely topics such as certification, enterprise computing, Java, Linux/Unix, web development, Windows, XML, and more.

Users can access titles through the K-State Libraries’ Catalog (catalog.lib.k-state.edu) or by browsing the Safari database (www.lib.k-state.edu/db/alpha/s.html). Access is limited to two simultaneous users, so if you are unable to get into the database, wait a minute and try again.

These e-books appear just as they would in print. Each title includes a complete table of contents with chapter links, and all charts, graphs, and images are included as originally published.

by Lin Davis-Stephens, instructor, Colby Community College

[Editor’s note:  Don’t miss the author’s related lecture at the Axio Conference this week at K-State. The conference is free, but registration is required. See the conference schedule for details.]

ldswildcatportraitStudents are seeking the message, craving the experience of being alive and part of the world around them. Basically, life is a cycle of action and reflection. I explore the relation of service-learning and student-centered learning in the higher education setting.

At Colby Community College, several programs of study emphasize learning-by-doing in realistic situations, then reflecting on what students have done. We see this as “fostering ideas, facilitating learning”. We invite participation and connect learning to real-life experiences. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard available at Union Computer Store

On Friday, Aug. 28, Apple released Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for all Intel-based Macs. Snow Leopard is available for $29 at the Union Computer Store or via their online store. If you purchased a qualifying Mac on or after June 8 that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade for $9.95 through Apple’s Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program.

This is an incremental upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard rather than a release of a new operating system. Hence the “Snow” added to Leopard rather than a new big cat name. According to Apple, Snow Leopard is “Refined, not reinvented”. Some of the features of Snow Leopard include: Continue reading “Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard available at Union Computer Store”
