Wireless access demand and usage recommendations

Did you know that there are 2,000 wireless access points across campus in buildings and green spaces and the number has doubled over the last three years?  To meet the growing demand and for scalability, Networking and Telecommunications Services (NTS) continues to upgrade the wireless network. To accommodate the demand that experts in the industry predict, universities and high-density organizations will need four times the current number of access points.

According to Danny Fronce, associate director of Networking and Telecommunications Services, more wireless devices are hitting the K-State network than ever before. At 9:05 a.m. on a typical Friday morning, 9,234 devices were connected to the K-State wireless network, said Fronce. Fast forward to noon on any given day, when peak usage occurs with 14,000 devices connecting to our network.

Q. I can’t get on the K-State wireless network. What do I do?

Get on the KSU Guest open wireless network, then link to wireless.ksu.edu and follow the instructions.

Q. K-State’s antivirus software won’t work on my computer. What do I do?

Update wireless access on a Mac after eID password change

There have been several reports of Apple Macs having issues reconnecting to the KSU Wireless and KSU Housing networks after a user changes their eID password. The best way to resolve this issue is to select KSU Guest from the network list and run through the XpressConnect process again. This will reconnect them to either KSU Wireless or KSU Housing depending on their specific needs.

Why you need to secure your home wireless network

Recent news out of Minnesota caught my attention and underscores the need for people to secure wireless networks at home. Barry Ardolf is accused of tapping into his neighbor’s home wireless network and sending a threatening e-mail to Vice President Joe Biden, making it appear to have come from his neighbor. As if that’s not enough, he also is alleged to have sent sexually explicit e-mails to his neighbor’s co-worker; sent child porn to his neighbor’s boss; set up a MySpace page in his neighbor’s name and posted child porn on it; used fake e-mail accounts set up in his neighbor’s name; and stole personal identity information.

Presumably none of us have neighbors like Ardolf, but I assure you many of us have neighbors who wouldn’t hesitate to use your wireless network if you make it easy for them. And default settings on common wireless routers do just that.
