CrashPlan PROe subscription available for campus departments

CrashPlan PROe, an alternative to traditional computer backups, is now available for subscription.  This K-State service quietly monitors your computer for changes in your files and backs them up to a secure, remote system using industry-leading 448-bit encryption. You can adjust what is backed up and can access those backups from anywhere using clients for most popular operating systems and mobile devices.

“New to IT at K-State” includes wireless printing, backing up data, designated access

Faculty, staff, and students who are new arrivals at K-State will find essential IT information and resources on the “New to IT at K-State” webpage, which covers  eIDs/passwords, computer networks, email, labs, printing, software, buying a computer, computer repair, and more.

The webpage is updated at least twice a year to cover new IT services and resources, and  changes in procedures, websites, and contacts. Recent updates include:

Reminder: Back up that paper!

As the spring 2011 semester winds down, deadlines are looming for papers, projects, etc. While we always hope that technology is available, there are many examples of lost papers in the final seconds — just before turning it in. This happens for many reasons (but never at an opportune time) including a failed computer, failed hard drive, power surge, network outage, and a host of other reasons.

Back up your laptop!

A recent stolen laptop incident in Oklahoma City underscores the importance of regularly backing up your laptop’s data files. A husband-wife team of cancer researchers at the University of Oklahoma went into a Panera restaurant for a bite to eat and came out to discover their car window shattered and their laptop gone. That’s disheartening enough, but the laptop contained years of research data accumulated in their search for a cure for prostate cancer.

It gets worse — an article about the incident states: “Unfortunately, most of the data was never backed up, a mistake Shin said could be a major setback in the fight against cancer.”

IT Security Roundtable May 8: Traveling safely

The time is nigh for K-State students, faculty, and staff to vacate Manhattan for distant lands over the summer. Thus, this month’s IT security roundtable, which is 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, in Union 213, will discuss tips on how to travel safely so people can protect themselves from identity theft, financial fraud, and other threats related to information and technology while on vacation. Topics include:
