About Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is the foremost spreadsheet program in use today.

It is commonly used to:

  • Conduct calculations
  • Clean data
  • Graph or plot data (to identify data patterns)
  • Create data visualizations (both static and interactive)
  • Apply visual styles to data tables and data visualizations
  • Create interactive data visualizations (interactive pivot tables, interactive
  • dashboards with sliders, and others)
  • Create simple macros for continuing data handling (with Visual Basic programming language)
  • Process data for analytics in other software programs
  • Enable the share-ability of information
  • Access online survey data (in analyze-able format), and more…

Records and Information Management Month: Email FAQs

Records and Information Management MonthAs part of Records and Information Management Month, the Division of IT and K-State Libraries share information about various topics related to records and information management. This week’s focus is on email records.

Every K-State employee is individually responsible for handling and maintaining records (including University email and other electronic records) under University policy and requirements. Emails are records that may contain evidence of official University actions, decisions, approvals, or transactions. Email is subject to statutes of the State of Kansas, KSA 45-401 through 45-414, which applies to preserving and destroying records. Records and Information Management Month: Data Storage Guidelines

Records and Information Management MonthAs part of Records and Information Management Month, the Division of IT and K-State Libraries are sharing information about various topics related to records and information management. This week’s focus is on data storage guidelines.

As part of the State of Kansas, Kansas State University is governed by statutes defining records retention requirements. State laws prohibit destroying or disposing of government records (see Records and Information Management Month: What is a record?), except as authorized by law or applicable retention and disposition schedules. Archive content from the K-State Online LMS by Aug.1

K-State Online, the homegrown Learning Management System (LMS) developed and used at K-State from 1998-2013, was retired in 2016. Course content, including syllabi, has been maintained based on the University Retention Schedule. However, beginning August 1, IT will no longer retain any course content data following the Course Content Records Retention Schedule. Retention schedule for Zoom recordings goes into effect July 5

Beginning Monday, July 5, all Zoom recordings older than 180 days (Jan. 4, 2021, or older) will be automatically moved to Zoom Trash. Going forward, all Zoom cloud recordings will be deleted from Zoom cloud storage 180 days from the date of creation. These recordings will be moved to the Zoom Trash folder and available for 30 additional days for recovery before permanent deletion.

Recordings that need to be kept beyond 180 days should be downloaded from Zoom and stored on your own local storage or in a different cloud location such as YouTube, OneDrive, or Mediasite. Zoom recordings created using the ‘Record on this computer’ option are stored locally on your computer and are exempt from the 180-day retention policy. April 2: Tapping Social Media with NCapture and NVivo

“Tapping Social Media Data with NCapture and NVivo” will be offered 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, April 2, on Zoom. This presentation provides an overview of the NCapture browser add-on (to Google Chrome and Microsoft IE) as a tool for extracting information from social media platforms and will explore how the extracted data is analyzed using NVivo 12 Plus / NVivo, a qualitative and mixed methods data analysis tool. (The NVivo for Mac now enables this functionality as well.)

Mar. 5: LIWC2015 for Computational Text Analysis

LIWC“Using LIWC2015 for Computational Linguistic Analysis” will be presented from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Friday, Mar. 5, via Zoom. (Link will not be live until the event.)

The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool enables users to conduct computational linguistic analyses on single texts, collections of texts, and text corpora, in order to better understand the latent data.

Feb. 12: Exploring the Advanced Features of Qualtrics


“Exploring Advanced Features of Qualtrics” is scheduled 1:30–3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, online on Zoom. All students, faculty, and staff who use this research suite are welcome to attend.

The Qualtrics tool that powers K-State Survey is one of the most sophisticated online survey and research tools on the market. At K-State, it is used for research, teaching assessment, event registration, large-scale policy compliance trainings, late TEVAL evaluations, and more. There is also an integration from Qualtrics to NVivo for direct access to online survey data for qualitative and mixed methods analysis.
