Students: Complete the 2010 Census Adjustment Questionnaire

The Office of Student Life is asking students to continue to complete the 2010 Census Adjustment Questionnaire. The K-State holds on iSIS services were applied on Jan. 25 and will impact students who have yet to complete the questionnaire.

Spotlight: Five-minute videos

5minVideopediaThe “5min Life Videopedia” website (www.5min.com) has a plethora of five-minute instructional videos covering many different categories, such as home, food, music, travel, technology, and more.

You can create your own videos and upload them to the site, or add existing videos to your own website with a few easy steps. You can either have a single video that’s related to your page or you can add a video thumbnail strip that displays multiple videos related to your page. In both cases, the VideoSeed tool analyzes the content of your pages and then displays relevant videos.

Cyber Monday has online technology bargains; safe shopping is key

Nov. 30 is the first Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday — and is “Cyber Monday”, the now-traditional marketing event for finding big electronics and technology bargains online. According to Wikipedia’s Cyber Monday page, the term was first used during the 2005 holiday season.

Don’t lose your head during all the sales and savings. Spotlight: Make websites easier to visit with URL shortening services

Tired of trying to point your friends to that one picture on Facebook, or that great blog post with the ridiculously long URL (web address)? There’s a solution out there for you. Many websites have started offering URL shortening services. What is URL shortening?

Imagine you want to point someone to an article in InfoTech Tuesday and the article’s URL is itnews.itac.k-state.edu/2009/07/simplify-internet-browsing-by-using-tabs/ . Obviously, that URL is too long and difficult to dictate to someone. What if, instead of that gargantuan URL, you could give them tinyurl.com/muzhwa or bit.ly/3WASwn?

ZAP Reader, a web-based speed-reading tool

ZAP Reader (www.zapreader.com) is a web-based “speed-reading program that can change the way you read on your computer,” says the website. “Current beta testers report reading twice as much in half the time — that’s a 300 percent increase in reading speed, without any loss in comprehension! There is nothing to install, it works with most popular browsers, and it’s totally free.”

Some sites offer value not in sophisticated technologies but in how people come together to share knowledge. One of those sites offers fast references to acronyms. Acronym Finder may be accessed at www.acronymfinder.com.

The following sites and resources have been added to the K-State website recently:

Monitor website traffic with Google Analytics

One of the foremost website-analysis tools is Google Analytics, a free tool that may be placed on a server to monitor the site’s traffic from around the world.

The report itself offers a visual dashboard of trend-lines over time based on the number of visits. There are also actual numbers reflected.

A technical profile shows which browsers were used to arrive at the site as well as the connection speed of site visitors. This helps site designers decide what sorts of content to deliver in terms of the required speed to access or download the content. Spotlight: Sustainability website at K-State

K-State’s first university-wide sustainability website launched Sept. 1 at sustainability.k-state.edu. The purpose of the website is to build awareness throughout the K-State community, whether on or off campus, about the wide variety of efforts and successes furthering sustainability at K-State. It can be a resource for connecting with efforts, for building new collaborations, and for promoting our successes and leadership in this area.

Most people will be interested in the Get Involved pages, which will grow over time to include many ways different people can get involved in furthering sustainability at K-State. You can also view the events calendar, with buttons for linking to personal calendars for automatic updating.
