E-portfolios (part 1): Using electronic portfolios for learning

Author’s note: This is the first article in a brief series on various technologies that may be used to render and output portfolios.

Back in the day, design portfolios involved plenty of different stocks of paper: translucent velum, glossy pages, and heavy card stock. For over a decade now, though, electronic portfolios have been the in-thing. They’ve been popularized because:

  • They travel light.
  • They offer more direct playability of contents like real-size imagery, videos, audio files, and simulations.
  • They showcase a fuller range of the designer’s capabilities.
  • They may directly connect (one click) to websites that may show more portfolio work.

What are e-portfolios? E-portfolios are structured works that showcase a learner’s background, a collection of his/her works (often including reflections on that work), a resume and curriculum vitae (CV), and his/her professional ambitions. For some fields, an e-portfolio works as a critical part of individuals’ job applications.

Voicemail transition to Modular Messaging is complete

Computing and Telecommunications Services successfully switched voicemail systems from Audix to Modular Messaging last Friday, Jan. 8.

The voicemail phone number did not change with this transition. Users will still access voicemail by dialing the same phone number they have always used to retrieve voicemail, 2-2300 (on-campus) or 785-532-2300 (off-campus).

All unread and saved messages on Audix are available for retrieval and playback by dialing 2-0000 (on-campus) or 785-532-0000 (off-campus). Continue reading “Voicemail transition to Modular Messaging is complete”

Reminder: Voicemail transition to Modular Messaging this Friday

This Friday, Jan. 8, Computing and Telecommunications Services will switch voicemail systems from Audix to Modular Messaging. The transition should be complete by 8 a.m.

The Modular Messaging system will make it unnecessary to use the Message Manager application. Message Manager users will begin accessing messages via the Web or with an IMAP-configured e-mail client after the transition. (To learn how, see the Voicemail website.) Billing for Message Manager will be cancelled automatically, starting Jan. 1. Continue reading “Reminder: Voicemail transition to Modular Messaging this Friday”

How to prepare for voicemail transition to Modular Messaging Jan. 8

Computing and Telecommunications Services will switch voicemail systems from Audix to Modular Messaging Jan. 8, 2010. Modular Messaging offers users the advantages of accessing voicemail messages not only through traditional dial-in, but also through the Web or by using an IMAP-configured e-mail client.

The voicemail phone number is not changing with this transition. Users will continue to access voicemail by dialing the same phone number they have always used to retrieve voicemail, 2-2300 (on-campus) or 785-532-2300 (off-campus).

After the transition, all unread and saved messages on Audix will be available for retrieval and playback by dialing 2-0000 (on-campus) or (785) 532-0000 (off-campus).

The Modular Messaging system will make it unnecessary to use the Message Manager application, as users will be able to access messages via the Web or with an IMAP-configured e-mail client. (To learn how, see the Voicemail website.) Billing for Message Manager will be cancelled automatically, starting Jan. 1.

Trend Micro antivirus updates coming Wednesday, Nov. 11

As reported last week, updates to K-State’s antivirus software for Windows and Mac computers will be available this week, but the date has been pushed back to Wednesday, Nov. 11.

For computers running Microsoft Windows, the upgrade from Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 to OfficeScan 10 will be pushed out from the server and installed automatically.  This process will begin Wednesday, Nov. 11, for all computers that use the central IT Trend Micro service, which includes student computers in the residence halls. Colleges and departments running their own Trend Micro server will not necessarily follow the same schedule, so check with your IT support staff.

When the installation is complete, users will be prompted to reboot their computer, with a message similar to this in the lower right corner of their screen:

TMOS reboot pop-up-small

Users should reboot their computer as soon as possible, since their computer will not have antivirus protection until after the reboot.

Trend Micro antivirus changes coming soon

As reported earlier, changes are in the works for antivirus protection for both Windows and Mac computers at K-State. For Windows, the primary issue was support for Windows 7 since Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 does not support it. For Macs, there were two issues — expiration of the Symantec AntiVirus for Macs license on Oct. 27 and Trend Micro Security for Macs 1.5 (TMSM) not supporting Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Fortunately, we now have solutions for all these issues.

Largest academic research supercomputer in Kansas is Beocat at K-State

Did you know that K-State has the largest academic research supercomputer in Kansas? “Beocat” is a computer cluster supporting research projects across campus with some pretty serious computational  horsepower — 1,000 cores in over 100 machines, which gang up to tackle big problems that on a single PC might take months or years to finish.

Typical uses include things like:

  • Trying to figure out which genetic markers correlate to various traits such as drought resistance or disease susceptibility in plants
  • Modeling water usage in the Ogallala Aquifer
  • Simulating the ability of a drug to penetrate a cellular membrane
