Email issues on July 9 resolved

Around 8 a.m. July 9, Merit — K-State’s email service provider — experienced a hardware failure impacting slowness and connectivity. Email services were restored around 5 p.m. Information Technology Services apologizes for the inconvenience.

Collaborative Technologies Summit July 12

ITS will be hosting a Video & Collaborative Technologies Summit 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 12, Hemisphere Room Hale Library. The purpose of this summit is to:

  • share information on the types of video services offered throughout campus
  • find mutual areas of collaboration
  • reduce confusion among service providers and end users.

Presentations will be given by several departments about the video-related services they offer. Services to be showcased include:

  • live video (H.323 and web conferencing)
  • lecture capturing
  • video editing
  • other video-related services.

KanRen will be presenting in the afternoon about the services they offer. The event will close at 3:00 p.m. with a discussion about collaborating and improving services for campus.

Ethiopia bans Skype, Google Talk, and all other VoIP services

The Ethiopian government has banned the use of Voice over IP (VoIP) services like Skype, Google Talk, and others. This ban comes with severe penalties — up to 15 years in prison — for those who use these services while in Ethiopia, including visitors.

Ethiopian authorities say they are imposing these bans because of “national security concerns” and to protect the state-opened Ethio Telecom, which is also the only Internet service provider in the country.

Leaving K-State? A technology checklist and money-saving tips

It’s that time of year again, when people leave K-State. Students are graduating, transferring to other universities, or just need a break. Faculty/staff are retiring or moving to new jobs. Whatever the reason, all can use the technology checklist on the Preparing to leave K-State webpage prior to terminating affiliation with K-State. And the money-saving tips below can help both students and employees.

The Preparing to leave K-State page covers what steps you should take to manage your electronic communications, files, and access to resources (and what happens if you don’t).  Here’s the highlights:

  1. Forward your email by signing in to eProfile and setting email-forwarding options. Note that students who were last enrolled at the university during the Fall 2011 term or later will have their email account continue at K-State for a year from the time they leave.
  2. Review your mailing list subscriptions. Unsubscribe from those you don’t want. For those you want to keep, subscribe from your new email address and  remove your K-State email address.

Training for grade submission in iSIS is now available. We will review the grade submission process as well as the changes to the iSIS grade roster for Spring 2012 prompted by federal financial aid regulations.

IT solutions: How to share files that are too large to attach to emails

Have you ever wondered if you were the only person on campus with a particular computer problem? Got a quick technology question and don’t know who to call? Contact the IT Help Desk, 785-532-7722, e-mail helpdesk@k-state.edu.


Question: I need to send out a portfolio for an internship, but the files are just too large to attach by email. How can I get this project out?

IT Help Desk: As discussed in a recent article, email attachments are a fast, simple method of sharing smaller files, but file-size limitations can complicate the process. When sharing large files, such as for projects or portfolios, consider using the “Briefcase” sharing feature of Zimbra webmail. Sharing allows you to give other users permission to view and save large files, even if they do not have a K-State account. (For external guests, the file owner must create a password to access the shared briefcase and then give the password to non-K-State users who need to view the files. April 16 registration deadline for free Twitter class

The registration deadline for the free, online course on “Getting Started with Twitter” is Monday, April 16. This four-week course begins Tuesday, April 17, and is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts and uses of Twitter.

Each week, participants will be required to do the readings and exercises assigned. Assignments can be done at the participant’s convenience, but must be completed prior to the start of the next week’s assignments. You can expect to spend 1-2 hours a week on the course. Questions about the course can be sent to Cathy Rodriguez (cathyr@k-state.edu).

iTAC offers free Twitter class

The Information Technology Assistance Center is offering a free, online course on “Getting Started with Twitter.” This four-week course begins Tuesday, April 17, and is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts and uses of Twitter. The course requires pre-registration.

Question:  I am trying to send an attachment to my email in Zimbra webmail. What is the limit on the file size?

IT Help Desk:  The limit for each email in K-State’s Zimbra system is 50MB (megabytes) including attachments.  That’s 51,200KB (kilobytes); 1 megabyte = 1,024 kilobytes. That is substantially more than most email service providers allow (typically 10-25MB).  So, when you are considering sending a large file attachment, first check the file size.

This does not take into consideration that a file attachment needs to be encoded — which typically adds roughly 30 percent to the file size.  That means the upper limit for a file attachment(s) is closer to 35MB.  It depends on the content of the attachment.

Acrobat and InDesign free seminar 2-4 p.m. today for faculty/staff

K-State faculty/staff are invited to attend the free Adobe seminar 2-4 p.m. today, March 12, in Room 212 of the K-State Student Union. The seminar is co-sponsored by K-State’s Information Technology Services.

Adobe is doing double duty by providing a free seminar on campus today and also participating in K-State’s Technology Showcase on Tuesday. As one of nine vendors in the showcase, Adobe is also supplying Adobe Creative Suite Software as one of the prizes that can be won by a lucky K-State faculty/staff member at the showcase.
