Instructional design videos online: E-textbooks; teaching with the iPad; teaching science labs at a distance

These three videos can now be viewed online from the Fall 2012 Instructional Design & Technology Roundtable series:

  • E-textbooks and Beyond — Creating your own e-textbook; using a publisher’s e-textbook; learning about Open Educational Resources.
    (78 minutes)
  • Teaching with the iPad — Specific apps to use in the classroom and daily life.  (67 minutes)
  • Teaching Science Labs at a Distance — The challenges, choices, and solutions for teaching empirical science courses online (86 minutes). A separate vendors’ presentation video is also available (39 minutes).

Taming the new Wild West: University cybersecurity expert selected for HP Innovation research program

Nearly undetectable, cyber criminals have turned the Internet into virtual Wild West. Helping to save the day is Kansas State University cybersecurity expert Xinming “Simon” Ou.

Although he may not be John Wayne, Ou, associate professor of computing and information sciences, is developing hacker detection tools in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard Co., or HP, as part of the HP Labs Innovation Research Program. A new wiki and blog tool is available in K-State Online and we are looking for instructors to try it out and provide feedback.

How “Find My iPhone” app can be helpful

If you lose your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, help is on the way.  Here on campus, you take your iOS devices everywhere and you may lose them somewhere along the way.

It may be in a classroom, dining facility, or somewhere in your office or dorm room.  Find My iPhone app can help you locate your missing iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Creating ebooks on an iPad

iPad options are springing up on the app store for ebook creation. Check out the Book Creator for iPad, a $4.99 app in the app store. This app uses the epub standard to create photo/art books, text-based books, albums, and almost any kind of book imaginable.

Content options for creating rich ebooks include:

  • The ability to select from more than 50 font options
  • Importing photos, videos, music, and recorded speech
  • Adding voiceover from within the app

Amara, a free and easy way to caption video

Amara is a free and easy-to-use video captioning and translation service. Captioning video makes videos accessible for the hearing-impaired and improves the video’s search results.  In addition to captioning video, you can also translate it into other languages.

Free SIDLIT conference has 60+ sessions on technologies, strategies for higher ed

“Re-imagining Education: Tools and Challenges” is the theme for this year’s annual SIDLIT conference on the latest technologies, strategies, and forward-thinking for higher education professionals. The free event is Thursday-Friday, Aug. 2-3, at Johnson County Community College, and registration is required. (Create a free account before registering. If you already have one, sign in and the registration form will appear.) Early registration is recommended as registration fills up fast.

This year’s schedule of presentations has 37 topics on Day 1, and 26 topics on Day 2. Attendees may find it difficult to choose between the variety of sessions, as up to 10 run concurrently during session timeslots. A sample of topics to pique your interest:
