“Video and imaging” demos at technology showcase March 13

The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase is 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. All faculty/staff are invited to attend free and see demos, visit with vendors, and win prizes. Pre-registration is required at ksushowcase.wordpress.com/registration and closes March 9.


No one can deny the impact of video and images on learning.  These faculty demonstrations March 13 will show tools, processes, and results when using video and imaging.

Using a Video Camera to Enhance F2F and Online Learning — Video cameras are a great tool to enhance learning from face-to-face experiences, especially in courses where social dynamics or group dynamics are addressed.  Recorded experiences can then be uploaded to K-State Online for archiving and viewing.  Learn how to easily use a video camera to enhance classroom or online learning experiences.

“Online teaching and learning” demos at technology showcase March 13

“Online teaching and learning” is a popular theme evidenced by these faculty demonstrations scheduled for the technology showcase.

The Real World:  Real Experiences Through Online Learning — What’s the difference between distance education and “real” classes?  See demos of assignments that engage distance students in learning “where the rubber meets the road,” or, where life really counts. Enhance communication through “off-road” technology such as instant messaging, flip cams, and videoconferencing.

A New Age:  A New Audience — Look at current trends and national demographics and the need for new approaches to teaching. See how one professor has transitioned from a traditional distance delivery format to an online delivery format, and how content and technology were integrated.

Keeping Up With the Geeks:  Teaching in the Online Environment — These technologies will help you transform on-campus courses into online courses without needing your own geek squad. Technologies include Dropbox, Prezi, Diigo, Jing, and Campus Pack.

IT solutions: Types of printing available in the labs and InfoCommons

Have you ever wondered if you were the only person on campus with a particular computer problem? Got a quick technology question and don’t know who to call? Contact the IT Help Desk at 785-532-7722 or e-mail helpdesk@k-state.edu.

Computers and printers for the campus community are in the K-State InfoCommons in Hale Library, and in university computing labs in Justin Hall, Dickens Hall, Seaton Hall, and the K-State Student Union.

  • Limited, free laser printing is available to all students, faculty, and staff via their K-State eID and password. $10 is allocated per person each fall and spring semester, and $5 each summer. Beyond those amounts, the Wildcat Card can be used for pay-for-printing. Unused balances do not carry forward to the next semester.
  • Black-and-white printing goes into one queue and can be retrieved at any printer in the labs and InfoCommons. Costs are 10 cents per page for black-and-white printing, and 18 cents two-sided (duplex).
  • Color printing is available in the K-State InfoCommons and the Media Development Center, Hale 213. Color printing is 75 cents per page.
  • Wireless printing is available from anywhere on campus to printers in Hale Library, Justin lab, Dickens lab, Seaton lab and library, and the Union Copy Center for on-campus users connected to the KSU Wireless network.

The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase for K-State faculty/staff, 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom will include product demonstrations by Cytek, Steelcase, Office Works, Panasonic, Varney’s, Dell, and Adobe.

Prize drawings will be held throughout the showcase. Faculty/staff must be present to win. In addition, a Varney’s gift card will be given to the first 200 faculty/staff who enter the ballroom.

OnLive Desktop: Windows and Microsoft Office on iPads

If you have ever wanted to have the same Windows desktop on all of your devices, the era is near. OnLive is supplying an application where you can access a Windows 7 desktop with Microsoft Office 2010 for free. Currently the OnLive Desktop is only available for iPad, but the company has plans to expand the application to Android, Windows, and Mac operating systems.

What exactly is OnLive Desktop? In short, it is a Windows PC in the cloud. You can access it from anywhere you have Internet access. OnLive gives you access to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as 2GB of storage space in the free version. In the future when the application is available for multiple devices, you will be able to access the same desktop from all of your different devices.

CloudOn: Free iPad app for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

CloudOn is a free iPad app for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can easily create and edit documents on your iPad.

CloudOn uses Dropbox for all document management tasks. Therefore, prior to installing CloudOn, create a Dropbox account and install the Dropbox iPad app. Watch the following video for an overview of the app.

The semester is in full swing. Lecture notes must be printed for class and assignments have to be turned in today. You’re in a hurry and need to print it now. So much to do, so little time… Computers and printers for the campus community are in the K-State InfoCommons in Hale Library, and university computing labs in Justin Hall, Dickens Hall, Seaton Hall, and the K-State Student Union.


Question: There are no computer terminals available anywhere. What are my options?

IT Help Desk: If you have a wireless laptop, printing is available from anywhere on campus to users connected to the KSU Wireless network. Registration is open for the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase

K-State faculty will share their teaching experiences and vendors will demonstrate their products at the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. Come and join the event, discuss over coffee, and stay for a light lunch. Prize drawings will be held throughout the showcase.

Registration for the event is required for planning purposes. If you haven’t previously registered for an event through the Division of Continuing Education, you need to create an account using your email address and setting a password. This should NOT be your eID password.

The Equipment category of the “Ask a Librarian” pages has common questions (and answers) about IT equipment available in the K-State Libraries.  The Q/As often include  pointers to IT resources outside of Hale Library, including branch libraries and the Salina campus.

Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase set for Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Technology Showcase logoMark your calendars for the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. There will be faculty presentations, faculty demonstrations, and vendor exhibits.

The goals for the event are to:

  • Showcase exemplary teaching talent on campus
  • Inspire faculty to use technology in innovative ways
  • Share best practices with university colleagues
  • Interact with technology vendors
