Leaving K-State? A technology checklist and money-saving tips

It’s that time of year again, when people leave K-State. Students are graduating, transferring to other universities, or just need a break. Faculty/staff are retiring or moving to new jobs. Whatever the reason, all can use the technology checklist on the Preparing to leave K-State webpage prior to terminating affiliation with K-State. And the money-saving tips below can help both students and employees.

The Preparing to leave K-State page covers what steps you should take to manage your electronic communications, files, and access to resources (and what happens if you don’t).  Here’s the highlights:

  1. Forward your email by signing in to eProfile and setting email-forwarding options. Note that students who were last enrolled at the university during the Fall 2011 term or later will have their email account continue at K-State for a year from the time they leave.
  2. Review your mailing list subscriptions. Unsubscribe from those you don’t want. For those you want to keep, subscribe from your new email address and  remove your K-State email address.
  3. Copy email and folders to other storage devices or services. (You can also export your calendar data to other calendar services.) Continue reading “Leaving K-State? A technology checklist and money-saving tips”

Free tool: Dropbox (online storage space)

What it is: An online tool to store all your files such as documents, images, and videos, and access them from a central location.

What it does: After creating your own Dropbox account, this free service allows you to have access to your files at your fingertips and exchange files with other Dropbox users. It is web-based and independent of the computer you are using.

A quick download of the Dropbox application to your computer permits all documents to be uploaded and available in the Dropbox website. Files can be exchanged easily across Macs and PCs.

Note: Internal, confidential, and proprietary data should not be shared with third-party services. See Data Classification Schema in K-State’s Data Classification and Security Policy. Also, the K-State Zimbra Briefcase allows for file storage.

Q/A: Website with discounts for K-State employees?

Q. I found a discounts webpage for KU Medical Center employees. Does K-State have a discounts webpage for its employees?

No, according to Human Resources. However, the State of Kansas has a STAR program (State Thanks & Recognition) that “offers State of Kansas employees an opportunity to take advantage of product and service discounts offered by various vendors throughout the state.”

Discounts apply to selected cellphones and computers as well as non-IT products. For more information, see the STAR website, call 785-296-4278, or e-mail star@da.ks.gov.

Apple back-to-school special runs through Sept. 7

It is “Back to School” time and through Tuesday, Sept. 7, Apple is offering a free iPod after mail-in rebate with the purchase of a qualifying Mac for Higher Education students, faculty/staff, and K-12 employees. This is in addition to Apple’s everyday education pricing.

With the purchase of a qualifying Mac, get your choice of a 4GB iPod shuffle; 8GB or 16GB iPod nano; or an 8GB iPod touch for free after mail-in rebate. Other iPod models qualify, but the maximum rebate is $199.

In addition, the Union Computer Store is running an in-store special that sweetens the deal by letting customers add an HP F4480 All-in-One printer (copy/print/scan) for 99 cents with their Mac purchase. And that includes a 6-foot USB cable!

Education resources: Chatzy (free, private chat area) and free e-book

Screen shot 2009-10-19 at 8.12.23 AM Chatzy ( www.chatzy.com) is a neat little website that I tried out in my summer class. According to the website, Chatzy provides a fast way to start your own private chat area. You can name your chat area, choose your privacy settings (even password-protect it), and then invite friends and family to start chatting. Instead of sending out invitations, you could just post the link to your chat area in K-State Online.

1. Applications for education

According to the Oct. 16, 2009, Chatzy article at www.freetech4teachers.com, “Chatzy is a nice alternative to Tiny Chat because you can restrict access to it. Chatzy could be used to hold an after-school tutorial session, host a discussion about a book or article, or use it as a back-channel during a class lecture.”

If students were all contributing information to the Chatzy area during class, there would be a very robust set of notes for each class lecture.

$10 limited free B/W, color printing in labs, InfoCommons, MDC

On Aug. 20, limited free printing in the university computing labs and K-State InfoCommons was reset to $10 for the fall semester. This service is available to all students with an active K-State eID, and is available via printers in those facilities as well as the Media Development Center (Hale 213).

Double-sided (duplex) black-and-white printing is the default in the labs and InfoCommons. Duplex printing costs 18 cents, and single pages are 10 cents.

This summer, all computers in the InfoCommons were updated to provide access to color printing, through the color printer in the Media Development Center. Color prints cost 75 cents per page for 8.5″ X 11″ or 11″ X 17″ sheets. Continue reading “$10 limited free B/W, color printing in labs, InfoCommons, MDC”
