More ETDR walk-in help sessions scheduled April 17-21

The spring semester deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, April 21, for submitting theses and dissertations to the Graduate School (via the K-REx system).

Grad students who miss the last weekly ETDR walk-in clinic 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. today (Wednesday, April 12, in Hale 301A) may be glad to hear more ETDR help sessions are scheduled every day of the ETDR deadline week April 17-21:

Monday, April 17 — 1-5 p.m.
Tuesday, April 18 — 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Wednesday, April 19 — 9-noon
Thursday, April 20 — 1-5 p.m.
Friday, April 21 — 1-5 p.m.

K-State stops critical attack on software

On Thursday, March 9, a critical exploit was executed around the world that enabled hackers to take control of web servers. At K-State, the software used to manage the Undergraduate Admissions and Scholarship Application and the Axio LMS (which is in limited use) was attacked. Within an hour of the exploit being known to the world, Information Technology Services (ITS) had an initial block of the attacks in place. Grad students and advisers: Daily walk-in help sessions to meet ETDR semester deadline Nov. 18

For grad students who plan to submit their thesis or dissertation to the Graduate School’s K-REx system by the semester deadline this week, which is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, extended walk-in ETDR help sessions are available in the Media Development Center, 213 Hale Library (adjacent to the IT Help Desk):

  • Monday, Nov. 14 — 1-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 15 — 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16 — 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 17 — 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 18 — 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Distance students and those not on the K-State-Manhattan campus may schedule Zoom and phone meetings on a first-come, first-served basis by using the ETDR Request Form (K-State eID/password required).

New authentication service for KSU Wireless and KSU Housing in Hale Library

""On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016, Information Technology Services will begin piloting a new authentication service for connectivity to KSU Wireless and KSU Housing in Hale Library. User experience can vary depending on individual device configurations.  For most users, the first time they try to connect to KSU Wireless or KSU Housing, they will be prompted to accept a new SSL certificate for cpradius.net.k-state.edu.  This acceptance is required before the user’s credentials can be passed to the new server for authentication.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding this new procedure or have difficulties connecting to KSU Wireless and KSU Housing while visiting Hale Library, please see an IT Help Desk consultant in Room 214.

Be aware of increase in university phishing scams

Since Jan. 1, Information Technology Services reported and blocked more than 2,100 phishing scams. However, before the blocks were in place, nearly 1,000 K-Staters shared their eID passwords.

Remember: You are responsible and the best line of defense to protect your identity, personal information and university resources. K-State will never ask for your eID password over the phone or in an email.

Attention: ITS staff will change the way K-State filters email on Thursday, Oct. 27. Specifically, email coming through k-state.edu or ksu.edu domains will be run through an email filtering process to reduce the amount of spam and phishing scams reaching your inbox. With the number of spam emails and phishing scams coming through to ksu.edu and k-state.edu addresses, we all need to change our practices.

K-State is changing how it filters email. Check your junk folder for legitimate email.

Additional ETDR walk-in sessions during ETDR deadline week of Nov. 18

Graduate students who plan to send their electronic theses, dissertations, and reports (ETDRs) to the Graduate School have about four weeks left before the semester deadline of 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, when ETDRs must be submitted via the K-REx system.

In addition to ETDR walk-in clinics every Tuesday through Nov. 8 in 301A Hale Library, five extended-help sessions are scheduled Nov. 14-18 in the Media Development Center, 213 Hale Library (adjacent to the IT Help Desk):

  • Monday, Nov. 14 — 1-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 15 — 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16 — 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 17 — 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Grad students and faculty advisers: Major changes on ETDR templates for fall 2016

Update from the Graduate School Oct. 28, 2016:  Students graduating in fall 2016 may use the new title, author, and copyright formats but are not required to do so.  Beginning in spring semester 2017, the Graduate School will only accept ETDRs formatted with the following new requirements.

 

Updated ETDR templates went online in mid-August.  Graduate students and faculty advisers should be aware that major format changes were made this summer to the title, author name, and copyright statement in the 2016 Word templates for Electronic Theses, Dissertations, and Reports.  In addition, a new 500-word limit on abstracts (350 previously) was added to incorporate a change in January from the Graduate School.

ETDR templates downloaded prior to mid-August 2016 need to be updated to meet the new guidelines. For students who haven’t started writing in those templates, it may be faster to download a new template.  To get help modifying an older ETDR template, submit an ETDR Request Form (eID/password required).

Welcome, new and returning K-Staters!  Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a variety of resources and services for free. Get your semester off to a good start by checking out a few of our resources:

  1. Get a free copy of Microsoft Office for personal use on up to 5 PCs or Macs, 5 tablets, and 5 phones.  See the installation instructions for Mac, for Windows, and for mobile devices.
  2. Connect your mobile devices to K-State’s wireless network.
  3. Install free Trend Micro Antivirus software (required for all computers connecting to K-State’s network).
  4. Use Zoom (video and audio conferencing) to meet virtually.
    Use Zoom to setup an online staff meeting, a training session, a class group meeting, beam in a speaker and more. See the Using Zoom guide to get started.
  5. Connect with the IT Help Desk on Twitter and Facebook.

Financial Information System successfully migrated to converged infrastructure

Over the last eighteen months, Information Technology Services (ITS) staff along with vendor partners have been working to overhaul our aging information technology infrastructure. The process of modernizing the data center combines servers, storage, networking, virtualization and management in a single managed solution referred to as a converged infrastructure. Joe Lear, director of enterprise server technologies explained, “This updated environment will allow us to merge our current server infrastructure from over 300 physical servers to four server racks, expand our virtualization capabilities, reduce our space requirements, provide a more reliable and faster system for data delivery and storage, and reduce power and cooling needs for the data center.”
